kings award of excellance for a friend
King's Award of Excellence for Duchess Marie Simone de Barjeval
Rowen the Shiftless
Copyright 2000
Poems of Charles of Orleans and other works.
A lover addressing three ladies.
Flanders, Bruges, c. 1490-1500
This manuscript was begun for Edward IV of England but left unfinished at his death in 1483, and was then completed for Henry VII. The roses symbolized the houses of York and Lancaster, but do work for the Ladies of the Rose, of which Duchess Marie Simone de Barjeval is one, and therefore appropriate. The picture is of a lover addressing three ladies. I allowed this to stay in the illumination as a representation of the courty virtues, and lastly the symbol of the feather I used to represent Simone as a patroness of the Arts. It was made of acid-free parchment paper and measured 11" X 14". The gold on it is Acrylic Gold. The pigments are once again period ground pigments. If you would like to learn more about the pigments I use, you may contact me and we can talk.
