Hi, I'm a new member of this tribe & a fairly new scribe. I'm trying to find some time to work on a new Bedford Hours scroll. What all things are you *yes, I'm looking at you* working on?

newbie! I like your mission stmt :-)

Greetings! I'm interested in learning more about SCA scrolls: what, when, how, etc. I'm very new to local SCA, so I'm still figuring out the terms used (promissory? ehh?) and occassions where a scroll would be used, etc.

I'm interested in learning about both calligraphy & illumination -- I have a fairly regular hand & many moons ago played around with a modern calligraphy pen set ... but I have a strong preference for finding out about scrolls in an SCA context.

My preference is to become very fluid with uncial (Irish) writing style, as I really like that hand. The link to the Gothic practice is =keen= and I'll certainly want to noodle with that at some point ... but I'd prefer to start with what I reallllly want to learn (unless, of course, there's a "starter" hand that would be useful for low-end scroll work in the near term...)

So, what would a newbie look to do that would cost <$15 or $20 to start? Assume that I have an assortment of papers (mostly Strathmore), pencils, rubber erasers, etc basic supplies. I also access to a decent/good art supply store... which has some nibs & holders, I just don't know which types/brands are worthwhile. (I recall a leaky cartridge fountain pen in the past; while the cartridge ink was very convenient, the leaking? not so much....)

To sum up:
* why scrolls? when are they given? what kinds are there? what are the expectations of each kind/event/etc (e.g., illumination? extra spiffy paper and/or ink and/or hand?)
* what hand / method to start with? (i.e., for lower end scrolls?)
* what materials to start with?
* any lessons learned, things to avoid or seek (including brands)

Oh, and any thoughts on using markers? I saw a neat one by Zig that was pigment ink, acid-free, archival, lightfast, waterproof, fade proof, nonbleeding ... pretty much a list of Dream Qualities in an ink ... but what about the form factor? Looked to have nibs about 2mm and 5mm IIRC....

Thx in advance :-)
